The Flying Canoe

A magic item inspired by French-Canadian folklore.

La Chasse-galerie

The Canoe initially appears to be an ordinary boat. However, when entered, it begins to hover ~6 inches over the ground. It can be paddled through the air as if it was in a river. As it gets up to speed it rises until it's around 100' over the ground. It can transport up to 8 people and their gear comfortably, a few more if they cram in.

If a sacrilege is ever committed inside the canoe while it's in the air, all those in it must Save vs Curses. On a failure they are cursed to paddle eternally through the skies. Those who succeed can jump out, try to crash deliberately, etc. Whoever actually committed the sacrilege automatically fails this save.

It has the speed of a rowboat, but can travel as the crow flies and across any terrain. Landing in a forest or other highly obstructed area requires a check, on a failure the canoe is smashed up and everyone inside takes 2d6 damage.
